Music:- Own Choice Pieces
On the Entry Form full details of each chosen piece must be given, i.e. title, composer and most importantly, the DURATION of the piece to enable the timetable to be made up A.S.A.P. Inaccurate timing leads to classes and sessions over-running. In some Classes a time limit is prescribed. In addition, for Senior and Open classes the time limit for own choice items is SIX MINUTES. Competitors playing over either this given time limit, or performing significantly longer than the previously submitted duration, may be stopped and /or disqualified.

Copies of Own Choice music should be sent with the Entry Form, clearly labelled with the Competitor’s name and Class number. If the Official Accompanist is required for Own Choice pieces a printed copy NOT A PHOTOCOPY should be sent, clearly labelled with the Class and Competitor numbers, preferably with the entry form but NO LATER than 12th January otherwise the Official Accompanist will not be available.

Ensembles must submit a Score of the chosen piece, not individual parts.

Please refer to the section on Photocopying.

Should Teachers/Tutors require to change entrants’ names originally submitted, this will be accepted provided:
a) The name is a replacement in the same Class and not additional to the original entry.
b) Notification is given to the Music Secretary by the 12th January of the Festival year.

N.B. Any changes may be too late for the programme.

Official Accompanist.
Competitors must indicate on the Entry Form if the Official Accompanist is required. If so 2 copies of Own Choice pieces must be submitted by the due date so that the accompanist has time to look over and practise the various pieces. This does not apply to set Test Pieces.

Competitors entering the Senior and Open Instrumental Classes, who wish the services of the Official Accompanist , should consider their choice of music very carefully before making their submission. Please remember that the accompanist generally has no previous rehearsal with the player/s.

N.B. Competitors failing to provide the music by the due date or offering different ‘Own Choice’ pieces on the day may be adjudicated but will not be graded or be part of the Competition.

Trophies
Winners are responsible for having trophies appropriately engraved. All trophies should be returned to Mr. A. Cameron, Lochside Education Centre, Lochside Rd., Lochside, Dumfries by the end of January of the Festival year, or to Mrs. Maxine Windsor, Middlefield House, (opposite Little Chef) Annan Road, tel. 01387-750536.

Qualifications
In classes where age limits are specified, the date at which age is taken is 1st March of the Festival year.

In order to marry competitor and competition, instrumental classes are grade-related rather than age-related.
The bandings are approximately as follows and relate to the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.

Preliminary: Up to and including Grade 1
Elementary/Junior: Grade 2 / 3
Intermediate: Grade 4 / 5
Senior: Grade 6 / 7
Open: Grade 8 and above

Competitors may not enter more than one Competition within each section e.g. Piano- Intermediate and Piano -Senior.

Photocopying
The Music Publishers Association has issued a Code of Practice on copying copyright works, and the following concession is made for copying ‘Own Choice’ pieces from volumes only for the adjudicator. Other items must not be copied without the permission of the copyright holder. Original music must be available at the performance.

" When an Own Choice piece is selected from a publication containing several different works and is not published separately, one copy may be made for the use of the adjucator at a competition or festival provided that the competitor or participant has already purchased his / her own copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed by the Administrator of the Competition or Festival immediately after the event. This permission specifically does not apply to prescribed pieces."

Competitors are advised that this permission applies only to the copyright holders who are members of the Music Publishers Association (listed at the back of the Code of Practice Leaflet, obtainable from the Association at 103, Kingsway, London WC2B 6QX). It is the competitor’s own responsibility to ensure that they seek permission to copy direct from any copyright holder whose name does not appear in the MPA List. Single copies of items may not be photocopied without the prior permission of the copyright holder. The permission does not apply to making photocopies for the Accompanist who should always have a printed copy from which to work.

Photocopies for the Adjudicator must be legible, or they may be refused.

The Executive Committee supports the Federation’s warning that the photocopying of music is illegal. All competitors must have an original copy of the material at the performance.
